Dryness, itching, bumps, skin irritation – these are some of the problems which men often complain of, post shaving. Little do they realize that all these can be prevented, provided, they use a good quality razor, shave properly and keep their facial skin well moisturized.
Tips to Avoid Dry Skin After Shaving
The Right Way to Moisturize
Keep the skin on the face moisturized. For this, invest in a good moisturizer. Moisturizing products which come with Aloe Vera, are especially known to prevent dryness and soothe irritated skin, which is often caused by shaving. Apply the moisturizer on your face before you apply a shaving cream. Thereafter, once you are done shaving, reapply the moisturizer. Follow this ritual every time you shave. This will ensure that your skin does not feel tight and dry. Instead of a moisturizer, you can even use petroleum jelly on your face, before shaving, as it is equally effective in keeping the skin well moisturized.
Choosing a Razor
Shaving with a dull blade means that you will have to press harder to cut the hair. This can cause cuts on your skin, resulting in bleeding, which means that you will have to wipe off the blood from your skin while shaving. Wiping the skin can result in water loss from it, leading to dryness.
Moreover, pressing hard to shave can cause flaky skin and irritation too. That’s why, it is recommended to always use a high-quality razor for shaving. The ones which come with multiple blades, allow a clean shave, minus any kind of skin bumps and rashes. Such razors ensure that no skin problems develop, which can otherwise contribute to making the facial skin dry and irritated.
The Correct Shaving Technique
Learn the right technique of shaving. Before you begin to shave, splash lukewarm water on your face. This will open up your skin pores and hair follicles, allowing a fine shave. A good idea is to shave in the shower itself. As your facial hair will become soft due to the steam from the shower, they can be cut close to the skin, thus preventing any kind of itching or dry skin to develop.
While shaving, many people make the mistake of shaving against the hair growth. This can cause the hair to become coarse and result in skin irritation as well. So, always make it a point to shave in the direction of the hair growth. Once you are finished with shaving, wash your face thoroughly with water so that no residue of the shaving gel is left on the skin, which can otherwise make it dry.
Splash your face with cold water post shaving so as to close the skin pores. This will reduce the chances of acne, ingrown hair, rashes and bumps to develop on the skin. Follow this up by pat drying the skin. Post shaving, the facial skin becomes very sensitive so avoid vigorously rubbing a towel over it! In the end, apply a soothing aftershave lotion. Avoid using aftershaves which have alcohol, as they can over dry the skin.
The easiest thing that you can do to take care of dry skin, is to increase your water intake. Keep your body hydrated, especially during the winter months, otherwise it can cause skin dryness. Taking a balanced diet, with the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins, will keep the skin in good condition too. Applying sunscreen before stepping into the sun should be made a habit as sunlight can have a damaging effect on the skin. Lastly, extremely hot water should not be used for bathing and face cleaning. If you follow these tips regularly, your likelihood of experiencing a dry face will reduce considerably.
